Bacalar Chico Rangers are presently working on establishing an eco-tour of the reserve in order to generate funds to help with the upkeep of the reserve, to provide business opportunities for tour guides in San Pedro and on the mainland and to educate the public about the reserve.
Bacalar Chico's cultural resources, Ancient Monuments and its biodiversity will be the focus of the Eco - Tour and the educational outreach program. Through both of these programs, the audience will be taught about the significance of these resources and how they impact their communities. The importance of preserving this inheritance will be stressed, and the audience will be made aware of ways to assist with the protection and preservation of their priceless heritage, while earning a living.
The ultimate result of this project will be the increased protection and preservation of our natural resources and monuments. This will be effected through education of the people and through continued surveillance and enforcement made possible by the funds brought in through increased tourism to the reserve.
The Bacalar Chico EDECO Project will also create a greater awareness of the NP/MR, its wildlife, the goals and activities to all members of the neighboring communities. It will stress the potential advantages for those interested in tour guiding and how to turn this resource into money without destroying it.
